A series of classic animal origin stories by Rudyard Kipling.
The Cat that Walked by Himself
Most domestic or farm animals have to earn their place by the fire. Kipling's short story – from the Just So Stories – tells us why cats can drink milk from a bowl and live a semi-wild life by themselves.
It takes us back to the time when people lived in caves. As always with Kipling (who also wrote The Jungle Book), the language is sonorous and wonderful.

How the Leopard Got His Spots
Part of our series of classic animal origin stories by Rudyard Kipling.
One of the Just So Stories for Little Children, a collection considered a classic of children’s literature.
The Just So origin stories describe how one animal or another acquired its most distinctive feature. First published in 1902, these stories began as bedtime stories to Kipling’s daughter “Effie” (Josephine). In this first story on Yoto, we hear how the leopard got his spots…
Running time: 17 minutes

How the Camel Got His Hump
Created originally for Kipling’s daughter, who had to hear each story with the exact same words: ‘Just So’.
Kipling’s Just So story - from when the world was very new - tells how the grumpy, idle camel turned his ‘humph’ into a ‘hump.’
The moral of the story is that not having enough to do makes people (and animals) grumpy. As we mention in the introduction, a few of the wonderful sounding words in the story were made up by Kipling – they mean what they sound like. Listen out for Richard’s wonderful ‘humph’ sound, and for the song at the end of this story.
Running time: 9 minutes
